Why do females wear dresses to church?

Dear Gramps,

Why do females wear dresses to church? I am in a Young Women’s presidency and we are having a problem with some of our girls wearing pants to church. I know I learned about this in primary. I know a prophet had to say something about this sometime. Who, when, and where? Also, how important do you think it is to follow this counsel? Some in the presidency think it is just important that the girls are there.

Sonja

Dear Sonja,

Going to sacrament meeting should be a sacred experience.

1– The building– Although the church building has many purposes, the chapel, or sanctuary, is a sacred place. In the chapel the utmost reverence should be displayed. There we may entertain the Spirit of the Lord.

2– The sacrament– During the sacrament meeting we have the opportunity to reflect on our baptismal covenant to take upon ourselves the very name of the Savior, to keep His commandments and to remain true and faithful all the days of our lives.

3– The sermons– Speakers are called upon to bear testimony and to teach us the gospel. Their presentations are ideally made under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

When we enter such a hallowed and sacred place for such a hallowed and sacred purpose, we should be dressed in our very finest. Our clothing should be modest, clean, and neat, and as befitting as possible to enter into the presence of the Spirit of the Lord. Recommending “Sunday attire” is a wonderful way to instill in our young people a sense and attitude of reverence to the Lord. Wearing dresses to church rather than casual slacks should be taught as an opportunity and a privilege, rather than as a restriction.
