Who exactly are the Gentiles and what is their significance in the scriptures?

Dear Gramps,
Who exactly are the Gentiles and what is their significance in the scriptures?
Paul

Dear Paul,
In the Old Testament, the English word “gentile,” was used to refer to all the people who were not Jews. We hear of two classes of people–the Jews and the Gentiles (non-Jews). The word is translated from the Hebrew, “gowy” literally meaning nation or people. In the New Testament, the word Gentile was used to refer to all people who were not Jews or Christians. It was translated from the Greek, “ethnos”, literally meaning a race, nation or group of people. It is also used in the scriptures to refer to pagan, a worshiper of false gods, or a heathen.
