What is the reason for the italicized words in the Bible?

Dear Gramps,

What is the reason for the italicized words in the Bible?

Alan, from Riverton, Utah

Dear Alan,

The King James Version of the Bible was translated in 1611 by 47 scholars from three universities under the direction of King James I of England. They used the Bishop’s Bible as the basis for their work. However, they had available and consulted both Hebrew and Greek texts of the scriptures. When all 47 scholars could not agree on the most appropriate translation of a given word, that word was placed in italics.
