What happens to the recipient of proxy ordinances if they are performed by an unworthy proxy?

Dear Gramps,
If someone goes to the temple unworthily to do baptisms for the dead (or anything else) what happens to the dead that were supposed to get baptized? Do they not have a chance anymore? and what happens to the unworthy person?
Frank, from Vista, California

Dear Frank,
Since there was only one person who ever lived on the earth who was completely without sin, the question in one sense is somewhat academic. But I assume that you are referring to someone who is willingly violating the Lord’s commandments. In those cases let me say that all the ordinances of the gospel as official acts, if performed by the requisite priesthood authority, are valid, and will be recorded and honored both on earth and in heaven.
But what happens to the unworthy participant? God is his judge, and he will be judged according to his deeds and according to the thoughts of his heart. And if any unworthy person does not fully repent and live according to all the laws of the gospel, he will never inherit the eternal blessings reserved for all those who love the Lord and who keep His commandments.
