What happened to the descendants of Hyrum Smith, Joseph Smith’s brother?

Dear Gramps,

You gave the birth and death dates of Hyrum Smith’s children by Jerusha, but did they go west? If so who did they travel with; if not who did they live with and where did they go? Thanks

Karmen, from Texas

Dear Karmen,

After Jerusha’s death, the Prophet counseled his brother Hyrum to marry Mary Fielding. Of course Mary accepted the position of step-mother to all of Jerusha’s and Hyrum’s children. We learn from the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, Vol.3, that

In 1846, Mary Fielding Smith left Nauvoo for the West with Joseph and three other children. Another son, John, met her in Iowa. Mary had only two children herself, Joseph and Martha Ann, but she was also mothering the five children of Hyrum and his deceased first wife, Jerusha.
