What do Mormons think of Reiki?

Gramps,
What do Mormons think of Reiki?
Jose, from Madrid, Spain

Dear Jose,
I can only tell you what this Mormon thinks of Reiki. Although it uses the terminology of “laying on of hands,” the function has absolutely no connection with the Mormon concept of the laying on of hands. Reiki teaches that there is a universal life force energy that may be accessed for healing purposes by flowing through the practitioner’s hands to the person being treated. Also it is stated to be a technique that could be learned by any one.  It may very well promote a healing effect. If it does, it would be in the same class as acupuncture, chiropractic, hypnosis,  psychometry, or even Kirlian photography. Each of these techniques for detecting or healing physical anomalies has proven to produce beneficial results when knowledgeably applied. I’m sure that the Mormon Church would have nothing to say about the use of any of them, since they do not profess to be a religion, nor to deal with priesthood functions or with spiritual matters.
