Was it wrong for me to have a tubal ligation? *

Dear Gramps,

I had a child who was severely disabled who passed away at the age of two. Medical tests showed a chromosomal defect passed down from me. After a subsequent pregnancy, I decided to undergo tubal ligation to prevent further pregnancy. I felt at the time that I did not want another child to suffer they way my daughter did during her short life. Have I done wrong?

Dear Anonymous,

Normally, as you are aware, we are discouraged from taking any action that would prevent subsequent offspring. However, as mortals, since we cannot see into the heart, we must judge by the observation of outward appearances; and since intent and motive, and all the other emotions that direct our actions are not available for examination or evaluation, none of us is in a position to judge another. As it is written in 1 Samuel 16:7,

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

.

So whether you have done wrong or not, perhaps you are the only judge. Without a doubt your intentions were pure in an attempt to relieve or prevent suffering. For those noble attitudes you will undoubtedly be blessed. Perhaps instead of asking someone like Gramps for advice on such a matter, you should ask the Lord to give you understanding, guidance and direction. If you have done no wrong, he will set your mind at ease. If you have done wrong, he knows how to heal.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls (Matthew 11:28-29).

(Matthew 11:28-29).
