Should I feel guilty for not studying the scriptures because of mental illness?*

Dear Gramps,

When I was younger I was able to read the scriptures like my life depended on it, but now that I am fighting numerous mental illnesses I am finding it more and more difficult concentrating on what Heavenly Father is trying to tell me. I feel guilty in not being as diligent as I think I should. Is there any comfort to this guilt? Thank you.

Patch, from Knoxville, Tennessee

Dear Patch,

In terms of our responsibility before the Father there is no difference between a mental illness and a physical illness or debility. Let’s say that you broke your arm and a call was made in priesthood meeting for volunteers to work on a physically demanding project. Do you think that you would be harshly judged for not responding to such a request. Our God is a kind and loving Father, not a harsh taskmaster. He understands the very feelings of the heart. Thus, you should not worry, and certainly you should not feel guilty for not doing things that you are unable to do.
