Is our sun a celestial world?

Dear Gramps,

When I was a student at BYU I remember reading that our sun is a celestial world. If I remember correctly it was a quote by a prophet. Have you ever heard anything about this? Thank you very much.

Lisa, from Soddy Daisy, Tennessee

Dear Lisa,

A scripture in point is found in Doctrine and Covenants 76:70—

These are they whose bodies are celestial, whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God, the highest of all, whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical.

If our sun is written of as being typical of a celestial glory, then it must be a celestial sun.

Here is an excerpt from a letter written by President Joseph Fielding Smith to his son, Milton, while he was serving as a missionary in Argentina in 1948, that has been recorded by Elder Bruce R. McConkie. This is probably what you heard at BYU.

“It is my opinion that the great stars that we see, including our sun, are celestial worlds; at least worlds that have passed on to their exaltation or other final resurrected status” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, edited by Bruce R. McConkie, 1:, p.88).
