Is it wrong to have a Vasectomy?

Dear Gramps,
Is it wrong to have a Vasectomy? Why?
Sean, from West Valley City, Utah

Dear Sean,
It depends entirely on the reason for such a procedure. The first commandment given to man was to—

Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth (Gen 1:28).

To contravene that commandment that is fundamental to all life in mortality would be the grossest of sins, unless it were done in order to save a person’s life. For instance, a vasectomy may be necessary to treat a particular malignancy. In such a case, it would be wrong not to have one. However, if one underwent a vasectomy for the sake of convenience, i.e., to prevent the possibility of having more children, he may put his very salvation in jeopardy.
