Is it reasonable to think that Helaman 3: 4 is referring to the Great Lakes region of the U.S.?

Dear Gramps,

Is it reasonable to think that Helaman 3: 4 is referring to the Great Lakes region of the U.S.? The header to the chapter does not speculate such a thought, but knowing the final outcome, the verse could clearly take a reader into that direction.

Greg from Louisiana

Dear Greg,

Such an interpretation of Helaman 3:4 is certainly a possibility. In addition, there is a school of thought that puts the narrow neck of land spoken of in Alma 63:5 between Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Such a conclusion would put the land Bountiful and thus the general Nephite civilization in that location.

But the truth is that no geological site has been identified with a Book of Mormon location, and so it is all conjecture. I imagine that we will be able to identify the location of Book of Mormon sites when the Lord chooses to reveal them to us.
