Is it all right to take NoDoz to keep awake on a stressful job?
Dear Gramps,
I was reading “The Teachings of Brigham Young” (or something with a similar title) on the LDS website (it was one of the chapters in a priesthood teaching manual). Brigham Young said something to the effect that if we are tired, we should rest, and not take a stimulating beverage such as coffee. Is it a violation of the Word of Wisdom to take a caffeine stimulant such as NoDoz? What if your work is such that you go to bed tired and get up tired? Please don’t say, “change your job.”
Shane
Dear Shane,
NoDoz is not technically against the Word of Wisdom, but it is against the word of wisdom. Section 89 of the Doctrine & Covenants, being a canonized scripture, is binding on the members of the Mormon Church. In the Word of Wisdom, “hot drinks†have been defined as coffee and tea. Anyone who uses coffee or tea would not be eligible, for instance, for a temple recommend. However, other caffeine-containing substances that are not mentioned in Section 89 are not technically against the Word of Wisdom. However, we are specifically counseled by the leaders of the Mormon Church not to use any habit forming drugs, and NoDoz is among them because of its caffeine content.
Now, with that preamble aside, let’s address your specific concern. I assume that you wake up tired because you have not slept well, and are asking questions about how to stay awake during the day because of a poor night’s sleep. I also assume that you do not sleep well because of your job. My impression is that it’s not the type of job you have that keeps you from resting at night, but rather your attitude toward your job. You probably spend the nights worrying about your performance or some other aspect of your job responsibility that is causing concern. So rather than suggesting that you change jobs, I would suggest that you change attitudes!
I have no idea what it is about your job that gives you concern, but let’s assume that there is more to do than you can reasonably handle and you have to take your work home with you at night.. Being tired after a full day’s work, your work in the evening is not that efficient, so you don’t get it all done, and therefore spend the night worrying about it.
For that particular case (and, believe me, I have been through it) I would refuse to take any work home at night. However, I would go in as early in the morning as necessary, pack a lunch and work through the lunch hour. Then, when I left the office, I would turn the work button off, and not think about it until the next day. Going in early in the morning to complete extra work when one is refreshed is much more efficient that trying to do it at night when one is tired. So the morning extra work takes less time and is much more efficient. So you should have less to worry about and be able to get a good night’s rest.
