Is it a sin to be rich?

Gramps,

In a lesson taught in Relief Society in the Mormon Church the teacher said that Brigham Young had stated “It’s not a sin to be rich, it’s a sin to stay poor.” I was struck by that statement and wrote it down but I failed to ask the teacher her reference. Are you aware of a quote like this? I would like to know the exact source. Thanks.. Chris, from los Osos, California

Dear Chris,

I have not heard of such a statement from Brigham Young. However, there is a statement of similar import in Jacob 2:17 in the Book of Mormon which says,

Think of your brethren like unto yourselves, and be familiar with all and free with your substance, that they may be rich like unto you.

It is important to note that it does not say, “that ye may be poor like unto them.”
