How can we call it free agency when we are commanded to follow something?

Gramps,
My step-son who is not a member told me that he can’t understand how we can believe that it is free agency when we are commanded to follow something. My response was it is our free agency to choose to accept or not, and he said it is not the same. If we subject ourselves to the commandment then we are no longer free to choose. I understand where he is coming from, but I am not sure how to answer his question or even if it can be answered.
Andee, from Utah

Dear Andee,
Tell your grandson that it would not be free agency only if we were forced to follow something. Does he imagine that free agency is only expressed in rebellion? That is a concept that I imagine Satan would try to implant in everyone he could. Of course we use our agency whenever we make a decision. The decision to follow the counsel, advice, direction and commands of those who are called by God to direct His work on the earth, is the wisest decision and use of free agency that could be imagined by man.
