Does a child need permission from both parents in order to be baptized in the Mormon Church?

Dear Gramps,

Recently I was divorced from my wife of 17 years. She was awarded custody of the kids, with me having “liberal” visitation rights. This coming month, my daughter, will turn 8… She wants to get baptized and is proceeding with that decision. I support her in that choice. My questions is, does the bishop of her ward have to get both parents permission to baptize her, or does he just need permission from the “custodial” parent? Thanks in advance for any insight.

John, from Idaho Falls, Idaho

Dear John,

That appears to me to be a perfect question to ask your bishop.
