Can you recommend how to remove old latex-based and lead-based paints from a brick building without sandblasting?

Gramps,
We renovate old buildings. Currently we want to remove paint from a brick building. The building was painted over 50 years ago with a lead based paint. Since then it has been painted 2-3 times with an latex based paint. We cannot sand blast. Can you recommend some chemical method?
Clay, from Boise, Idaho

Dear Clay,
To remove old dried latex based paint we would recommend that you try Motsenbocker’s Lift Off #5, available from Detep, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The removal of lead-based paints is another matter, as the removed paint may present an environmental hazard. Nevertheless, this same company has a chemical removal method for lead-based paints called PreTox 2000. They are located in Cincinnati, Ohio at 3541 Struble Road, Suite 100, zip 45251-4957. Their phone number is 513.245-2420.
