Can men and women serve together in presidencies in the Mormon Church?

Dear Gramps,

My daughter is the primary president in a small ward. She needs counselors but the membership is limited. She is wondering if a male could serve in that calling. We have not ever heard of this, but wonder why not? Males have served as teachers, as pianists . . . so why not as counselors? She and the bishop have not found an answer to this. Thank you.

Nellie, in Oklahoma

Dear Nellie,

These are matters for local jurisdiction in accordance with Mormon Church policies and procedures. If your bishop does not have the answer to this question, the next logical step would be for him to consider informing the stake high councilman assigned to his ward to that he could take it to the stake president for a decision.
