Is it wrong to play Dungeons and Dragons?

Dear Gramps,

You’re such a breath of fresh air. Thanks. Is it wrong to play Dungeons and Dragons? My husband, good Mormon that he is, really enjoys playing on Saturday nights with some neighbors. It makes him happy, and after he comes home we spend an enjoyable hour while he re-hashes what happened in the game. He does not dwell on it during the week, and does not even play every week as it’s often cancelled. None of his church duties or family time is affected (I enjoy the time I get alone during those few hours). What do you think?..

Dear anonymous,

Now you have me guessing. Dungeons and Dragons–I’m guessing that it is a computer game where several participants interact somehow with one another managing characters in a software program. Now, would it be wrong to play such a game? Since it is obvious that I don’t know what I’m talking about, let me generalize a bit. Does the game have any immoral implications? From the tone of your communication I would rather think not? Does it promote any content that one would imagine would be Satan inspire? Again, I rather think not. Is it a waste of time? I imagine not, if fellowship and enjoyment is derived from the game, and it is not entered into with such a frequency as to interfere with other more important activities.

When you read what I next have to say you may consider that which appears above as a bit of self justification on the part of Gramps. Gramps was introduced to the game of pool about four years ago, and spends as much as three to fours a day at the pool table. (I must confess that dealing with all these Ask Gramps questions is robbing me of quite a bit of time at the pool table).
