Eyebrow Embroidery

Dear Gramps,

Do you know the Church‘s stand on eyebrow embroidery? I’ve wanted to do it but was concerned that it may not be in line with church policy. I’m confused about it now after finding out that bishop’s wife had it done.

Please advise. Thank you.

SS,

Personal appearance is a varied matter depending on whom you’re speaking with, where they’re from, their cultural background, etc. As such, the standards of the LDS Church are pretty straightforward, yet quite flexible as well.

eyebrow embroideryWhen it comes to deciding if a specific fashion, or trend is acceptable, the line seems to be at whether or not it is a permanent change or appearance. Generally speaking, if it is a temporary change, then it would be fine, in moderation. If it is a permanent change, then genereally speaking, it is frowned upon. For instance, tattoos are frowned upon in general, however I have not only personally known excellent members of the church that have had several tattoos, but I have yet to hear of anyone being excommunicated for them.

Now, as with many cultural rules, there are exceptions, such as plastic surgery for cancer survivors or auto accident victims. There are noble purposes for some physical alterations we can have done to ourselves, and as such, they are fine.

What you are discussing in eyebrow embroidery is not a very radical process, so on the surface I can’t see any reason it would be discouraged. However, this opens another discussion I just want to touch on lightly, and that is the value of a positive self-image.

Society has a major impact on how we view ourselves, for better or worse. The most powerful area these days is our physical appearance. From our height, to our weight, muscle mass, to our hair and face, etc….even the clothes we wear. All these are used to measure and judge people. It’s interesting, then, to recall that the Lord doesn’t consider any of those at all when measuring our worth to him. Where he sees true beauty is in the heart and mind, or what we make of ourselves inside.

For my part, as a grandparent to several beautiful grandchildren, I would advise you to take the time to think about why you want to have the eyebrow embroidery done. Again, I don’t see anything wrong with it, nor do I think the LDS Church would object in any way at all. However what needs to be considered is the reason behind the desire. If you think it will make you more popular, and a better fit socially, then maybe it’s not the right thing to do. If, however, you feel it will help you feel more confident, or you feel at peace with the idea, then I say go for it and have fun with it. Just remember, all things in moderation.
