Dear Gramps,

I remember reading somewhere that a righteous person won’t die before their appointed time. Is this correct doctrine? It would bring great comfort to a friend of mine whose daughter recently died. Thanks so much!  I really appreciate the time you take to answer all the questions you get.

As the famous saying goes, “No parent should ever have to bury their child.”

I cannot imagine a more heartbreaking scene, regardless of the cause of death. At the same time death is still a surprise visitor for all ages, but especially children. While I cannot recall a scripture that states we all have a specific time to die, there is something Jesus said to his apostles that brings me great comfort. He was giving instructions to his apostles about how to conduct themselves in their duty. In Matthew chapter ten, this is what I found, starting with verse twenty-eight

Matthew 10:28-32

28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

So, while precious family members die long before their time, it is a great comfort to know that Heavenly Father is very much aware of us all. He is our father and he loves us more than we can understand. We may never learn why such difficult events happen to us. We must lean upon the Lord for our strength throughout our lives, and especially during times of personal tragedy. As we do so, we can come closer to Heavenly Father and have greater portion of his spirit with us.
